THE MCNEILLS OF TIREE, SCOTLAND A GENEALOGY STORY FROM THE INNER HEBRIDES November 28, 2020 Lachlan McNeill, was born on August 26, 1863 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Scotland, to Julia McNeill (born in Hough, Tiree, in May 1838, 8 th of 10 children). Lachlan’s birth was registered in both Glasgow and on the Isle of Tiree, an Inner Hebridean island about 60 kilometres from Oban. When Lachlan married Annie McDonald in 1895, he said his father was Neil McNeill (also spelled Niel MacNeill). Upon his death in 1946, the informant (his son, a Lachlan as well) did not list a father; he only listed the deceased man’s mother, Julia. Until late 2020, we had no further information or actual proof as to whether or not a Neil McNeill was the father of Lachlan.
